The Witch-King of Angmar, referred to in the movie only as the "Lord of the Nazgul," was the leader of the Nazgul. He was the second-in-command of Sauron himself and, according to prophecy, could not be killed by any man.
Biography[]
The Witch-King of Angmar was present at the battle for Minas Tirith, first appearing atop a demonic winged horse to oversee the breaking of the gate by the armies of Orcs, and confronting Gandalf when it fell. However, he was forced to flee when a cockerel crowed and the sun came out. He appeared again as he rode on his Fell-Beast, a ferocious type of dragon. The dark clouds he had summoned caused Theoden's horse to throw him off, mortally wounded the King of Rohan, and when he descended onto the ground, Eowyn, the King's neice, confronted him. He merely mocked her and told her to step aside. But Eowyn showed him she meant business and killed his Fell-Beast. Angry now, the leader of the Nazgul struck at her, shattering her shield with his first blow. But before he could press the attack, Meriadoc Brandybuck came up and stabbed him. The Witch-King shrieked with rage and Eowyn, being a woman and therefore capable of killing him, swung her sword through where his head would be and he crumpled, dead, to the ground, with his body melting away and leaving empty armor behind.
Personality and traits[]
The Witch King was extremely arrogant and evil, confident in his belief that he was impervious to harm. He showed no mercy on the battlefield and held all who opposed him in scorn.
Appearance[]
The Witch King had an echoing, clanging voice and no head, but two glowing eyes and a crown. He wore a black hooded cloak cape with a red satin lining, a robe, a tunic shirt, dark gray gauntlet glove, a black padded belt with a golden buckle, pants and dark gray boots and, like all the minions of the Dark Lord, bore on his chest the Eye of Sauron.
